Your skin is the largest organ of your body. It receives nourishment from what you put in your body and what you put on it. To moisturize your skin effectively, you must take in enough water and nutrients to help your skin maintain a natural balance, as well as moisturize externally.  Here are four tips to help your skin stay supple and soft.

Focus on moisturizing from the inside out! Add omega-3 fatty acids to your diet.  These powerful antioxidants help moisturize the skin and protect it from UV damage. Great sources of omega 3 in your diet include walnuts, chia seeds, flax seeds, and olives.  Go for whole plant powered foods.  For example, having an afternoon snack of almonds is a perfect way to add in a boost of your omega 3s.

Ensure your water intake is at least half oz per pound of your body weight.  Water is by far the most important nutrient for the human body. Next to oxygen, the human body needs water in order to survive.  About 70% of the human body is water.  It is important to consume water through the day, and especially during and after you exercise.  An easy way to remember is to drink a half oz per pound of your body weight.  Or try an online water calculator:  http://nutrition.about.com/library/blwatercalculator.htm

Dry skin brush daily before your shower.  Dry brushing involves exfoliation of the skin by using a soft, dry brush to gently brush the skin.  This quick routine is one best in the shower, so all dead skin can be washed down the drain.  Starting at your feet, brush in small circles towards your heart.  Always use light strokes towards he heart.  This will help with detoxification.  Work up each leg, one at a time, first the back of the leg.  After you’ve finished both legs, move on to your arms. Brush from your fingertips, again towards your heart.  Move to the back (this is where a short handled brush may come in handy) working your movements towards your stomach.  Finish by brushing your stomach, starting at your lower abdomen and work your way up and ending at your chest in an upward stroke.  Rinse off and shower as normal.  Never dry brush on broken, thin, or irritated skin.

Apply Coconut Oil daily.  Coconut oil is an effective moisturizer on all types of skins. Coconut oil therefore is a safe solution for preventing dryness and flaking of skin and unlike mineral oil, there is no chance of adverse side effects.  Coconut oil can also help in treating skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema.
