4 out of 5 Sunflowers
“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.” – Thomas Edison
Fact: In 2006, there were 631,636 Americans that died from heart disease. That is one in every four Americans, or about one person a minute, died of heart disease in the U.S alone. (source: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/lcod.htm) Another startling fact is that roughly 50 percent of Americans are currently on prescription drugs.
Official Synopsis: What has happened to us? Despite the most advanced medical technology in the world, we are sicker than ever by nearly every measure. Two out of every three of us are overweight. Cases of diabetes are exploding, especially amongst our younger population. About half of us are taking at least one prescription drug. Major medical operations have become routine, helping to drive health care costs to astronomical levels. Heart disease, cancer and stroke are the country’s three leading causes of death, even though billions are spent each year to “battle” these very conditions. Millions suffer from a host of other degenerative diseases. Could it be there’s a single solution to all of these problems? A solution so comprehensive but so straightforward, that it’s mind-boggling that more of us haven’t taken it seriously?

Forks Over Knives begins by introducing the backgrounds and common paths of Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Each doctor had their own experiences in learning about the benefits of a plant-based diet to heal and to avoid many diseases. Their research has been game-changing in the area of health and nutrition. In fact, these gentlemen are household names in the global community of people that follow a vegan diet. This documentary shares vital knowledge with the world about the benefits of exclusively eating from the plant kingdom. What is apparent is that plant-based foods can prevent or cure you from diabetes, cancer, stroke and heart disease, the leading cause of death in America. (source: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/lcod.htm) In the movie there is compelling research and evidence presented about the correlation of diet and health.
“I know of nothing else in medicine that can come close to what a plant-based diet can do.” ~ Dr. T. Colin Campbell
The next segments of the movie feature people who have chosen to take on their health and have had wonderful results. Joey Aucoin, a landscaping company owner was diagnosed with high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. Evelyn Oswick had experienced a second heart attack. Evelyn agreed to take part in Dr. Esselstyn’s research study at the Cleveland Clinic. San’Dera Nation visited Dr. Esselstyn to have her diabetes and hypertension treated and is now glowing with energy. There are many other examples in the movie. Showing real-life examples of people choosing to live healthy is a powerful way to understand the effectiveness of eating a plant-based diet.
This movie is one of many in the growing field of resources including documentaries, books, success stories, case studies and amazing research about the benefits of eating fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, nuts and seeds. Enjoy the movie! I highly recommend it for you and your family.
